How would you describe SPECT to a non-scientist?

• SPECT is an example of nuclear medicine which is often used with CT
• A gamma-emitting radionuclide is delivered into a patient, normally via injection
• Radionuclide collects in areas of high metabolic activity (eg. tumour)
• SPECT shows physiology not just anatomy
• Gamma camera is rotated around the patient. Images (projections) of the patient from many angles are collected
• These images are combined using filtered backprojection and iterative techniques to form a 3D image

How can imaging and therapy be combined using SPECT?

Answer 2

• Bremsstrahlung SPECT is possible with 90Y as it is a beta-emitter (although resolution is poor). This combines imaging and therapy in one. PET may be a better choice
