SPECT is an example of nuclear medicine which is often used with CT
A gamma-emitting radionuclide is delivered into a patient, normally via injection
Radionuclide collects in areas of high metabolic activity (eg. tumour)
SPECT shows physiology not just anatomy
Gamma camera is rotated around the patient. Images (projections) of the patient from many angles are collected
These images are combined using filtered backprojection and iterative techniques to form a 3D image

Q
How can imaging and therapy be combined using SPECT?
A
Bremsstrahlung SPECT is possible with 90Y as it is a beta-emitter (although resolution is poor). This combines imaging and therapy in one. PET may be a better choice
