State the primary forces that affect stability.
Gravity & Buoyancy
Define center of gravity and state how it changes as weight is added or subtracted upon the boat.
The point at which the boat acts vertically downward
When weight is added the boat leans towards the added weight.
When weight is subtracted it leans the opposite way.
Define buoyancy.
Upward force of water displaced by the hull
Define equilibrium and state how it changes during rolling, heeling, and listing.
Center of buoyancy acting upward is below the center of gravity acting downward.
Rolling - boat rocks side to side due to waves, winds, or uneven weight.
Heeling- a temporary lean in the boat
Listing- boat stays tilted due to winds
State the two types of stability
Longitudinal (fore&aft)
Transverse (athwardships)
