1
Q

Hypothesis testing (in a nutshell)

A
  • we have some hypothesis we wish to see if true so…
  • we collect some sample data and…
  • if that data is sufficiently unlikely to have emerged ‘just by chance’ then H1 is correct

Q

One-tailed testing

A
  • define test statistic (X) and probability (p)
  • write null and alternative hypotheses
  • determine probability of X or more extreme assuming null
  • reject H0 or not? - put in context of question

Q

Two-tailed testing

A

same as doing two one-tailed tests but we half the significance level in either tail

e.g. 5% two-tailed test is equivalent to doing a 2.5% level lower and upper tail test

  • uses H1: p≠
  • X~B (…,p)
