Sanitizing
Sanitizing includes a cleansing process that removes organic material and reduces the number of
microorganisms to a safe level. In our practices, this is done with the PreKlenz step.
Disinfecting
The process of killing pathogenic organisms or rendering them inactive. Once the instruments are taken to reprocessing, they are
disinfected prior to autoclave
Sterilization
Complete destruction of all pathogens and spores. This is done by using the autoclave
Autoclave
uses steam under pressure to kill
pathogens and spores.
Recommendations for autoclave
Sterile water
single use and multi-use) are used as a diluent for medications
Sterile normal saline
(0.9% Sodium Chloride (single
dose), Bacteriostatic 0.9% Sodium Chloride (multi-dose) or 0.9% Sodium Chloride Irrigation solution
Absorbable sutures
Vicryl, Dexon, PDS, gut sutures and Maxon
Non-absorbable sutures
silk, Dacron, Prolene
