Continued use despite significant problems of at least three of the following during 12 months:

• Tolerance
• Withdrawal
• Larger consumption than intended over longer periods than intended
• Persistent desire
• Great deal of time spent obtaining, using or recovering from substance
• Activities reduced due to substance use
• Continued use despite persistent or recurrent psy and physical problems caused by use.

SA impairs for longer than 12 months at least one of the following:

• Unable to fulfill major role obligations at home, school or work.
• Use in known to be physically hazardous.
• Legal problems arise due to use.
• Continued use despite problems with others.
