Explain laminating?
Laminating is the process of bending wood to a particular shape.
- first a former is produced using a durable material and is clamped together using G clamps of wedges
- wood is sawed into thin strips (vaneers) which easily bend around the former. Each vaneer needs to be slightly longer and wider then the final product to ensure. The vaneers are then glued and clamped onto the former and left until dry.
- once dry the lamination is removed from the former and trimmed and finished
What are the four types of metal finishes?
painting, dip coating, powder coating, galvonising and anodising
Explain how and why powder coating is done?
- Item being coated is electrically charged and paint is applied in powdered form. The powder is attracted to charged object where it forms an even layer.
- object then passes through an oven where the paint cures and hardens
- powder coating provides a more durable finish than other painting methods and means oxygen cant get to the metal providing an easthetic and protection

Explain mining?
- mining is the removal of extraction of minerals and metals from the earth
- damages environment, contaminates water supply, threatens indiginous communities, deforestation
- metal has to be extracted from ore using cyanide and mercury - can harm us and environment

Explain land dredging?
land dredging involves drilling a hole in the ground and using high pressure hose to expose the layer of sand and clay that holds small pieces of metal. Metal collected from slurry and the waste is collected in pools
Explain river dredging ?
moving along a river with a suction hose to collect gravel and mud.
This travels down pipes where any metal fragments are collected. Waste gravel and mud is deposited down the the river and can disrupt natural flow
WHat has to happen to metal after river or land dredging?
- raw material has to be melted down using energy and may have to be extracted from ore.
after extraction or melting down you get pure metal
Explain what reduce is?
the amount of energy and materials used in manufacture of the product. This will help protect valuable resources

using product for something else so you dont need to through it away
