Scott v. Stanford
- slave suing an owner
- lived in a free state, but Scott was from Missouri, then moved to Illinois
- slaves said that he was now free and couldn’t take him back
- decided that Scott was a slave
- 1857
- basically caused the civil war
Gideon v. Wainwright
1963
- arrested for breaking into a poolroom in Florida
- argued that the court denied his constitutional right to be represented by counsel (6th amendment)
- Supreme Court ruled that the accused have the right to a defender and state courts must provide a defender if the person can’t
Escobedo v. Illinois
- 1964
- police officers denied request for Escobedo to see his lawyer
- he confessed so murder after several hours
- he wasn’t informed by police officers that he could stay silent
- case lost impact since the creation of Miranda rights
Miranda v. Arizona
- 1966
- charged with rape, kidnapping, and robbery
- was not informed of his rights
- Supreme Court rules that the price syrup could not use Miranda’s confession as evidence Bc the police failed to inform him of his rights
- results of the case protected the rights of the accused
Plessy v. Ferguson
- a 7/8 white/ black man was arrested
- set that segregation was acceptable by law, blocked further legislation to disband segregation
- southern states took advantage of this and began to pass laws like those in Mississippi, requiring segregation
Brown v. Board of education
1954
- overturned plessy v feeguson
- a little girl had to walk a mike to get to school
- decision energized the civil rights movement in the 1950’s
- court said that a quality education was crucial for all children
- noted that segregation has a detrimental effect on children of color
Heart of Atlanta motel v. US
1964
- hotel that only allowed whites
- violated the civil rights act of 1964
- Supreme Court upheld the law
- a powerful legal tool was now available to enforce equal treatment
- over the year lesser instances of racial discrimination in public places
