Pivot
Rounded end of the bone fitting into a ring formed by the other bone. e.g. Neck.
Ball and socket
End of one bone fitting into a cup-like socket of another. e.g. Shoulder and hip.
Hinge
The bones are able to flex to decrease the angle between them. e.g. Knee and elbow.
Saddle
The bone sitting on the ‘saddle’ can move in an oval shape relative to the other bone. e.g. Thumb.
Condyloid
Oval shaped end of one bone fitting into another similar oval shaped bone. e.g. Fingers.
Gliding joints
Formed between bones that meet at flat or nearly flat articular surfaces. e.g. Metacarpals.
