Tactic to gauge alcohol—back of the throat warmth
The “Back of the Throat Warmth” (Most Reliable)
Alcohol rises after you swallow.
• Low (≤12.9%) → virtually no heat
• Medium (13-13.9%) → gentle warmth, soft glow
• Medium+ (14–14.9%) → noticeable but not aggressive
• High (15%+) → distinct burn, heat travels down the throat
Tip: Don’t analyze the heat during the sip — wait until you swallow and exhale.
Alcohol (sight) trick—tears
Viscosity / Legs (Helpful but NOT definitive)
You’re not reading the legs themselves — you’re looking at:
• Thickness
• Speed of the droplets
• Stickiness on the glass
Higher ABV → slower, thicker tears
But sugar and glycerol can mimic this, so use it only to support your guess.
Acidity blind tasting gauge
After taking a sip, lean forward slightly and let saliva pool under your tongue:
- Small amount, slowly? → Med-
- Steady but not sharp? → Med
- Immediate gush but not stinging? → Med+
- Violent flooding and sharpness? → High
