9
Q

what are some problems with classifying species 4

A

-species are genetically diverse
-some species can be reclassifies into two
-biologists often disagree about particular species
-new species can arise from existing species - species can change with time

Q

define Convergent

A

organisms look similar now because they live in similar environments but actually aren’t the same

13
Q

reasons for courtship behaviour

A

recognise their own species
identify opposite sex
to form a pair bond
showing fertility

A

using colour, size number of legs etc
using analogous characteristics

15
Q

define generic name

A

genus organism belongs to

16
Q

define specific name

A

species which organism belongs to

17
Q

define phylogenetic classification

A

name based on evolutionary relationships
based on shared features between organisms and their ancestors

17
Q

how to use biological molecules to see if 2 species are related (not immunological evidence)

A

compare dna sequences
compare protein sequences

18
Q

describe how immunological evidence can be used to determine if 2 species are related

A

inject protein from one species into another organism
obtain antibodies
add proteins from other species
amount of precipitate indicates relationship

Inject antibodies made against a protein (e.g., haemoglobin) from species A into samples from species B.
If the protein in species B is similar, the antibodies will bind strongly.
The greater the antibody-antigen binding, the more closely related the species are.
Weak or little binding suggests the proteins are different, so the species are less closely related

19
Q

What are the three domains

A

archae bacteria and eukarya

19
Q

what is morphology

A

how an organism looks

20
Q

what is molecular phylogeny

A

the sequence of its genes

21
Q

give 4 problems with classifying diseases

A
  • species are physically and genetically diverse
  • biologists often disagree
  • sometimes species can be reclassified into 2 species
  • new species can arise from existing species
22
what are the reasons for courtship behaviour
to find organism of the same species the opposite sex sexual maturity to form a pair bond
23
what does it mean when 2 organisms are closely related
have recent common ancestors have more dna base sequences in common
24
what is speciation
formation of a new species
25
what is genetic diversity
number of different alleles of each gene
26
