Rotary VAD
Clinical development of non-pulsatile pumps lagged behind the development of the first generation pulsatile positive displacement pumps.
In 1960 – 1st described continuous flow circulatory pumps.
DeBakey and Noon developed a small axial flow LVAD that went into clinical trials in 1998.
Followed by Jarvik 2000 in 1999.
Nimbus/ HMII axial flow pump in 2000.
Rotary pumps
Uses rotating impellers to propel blood forward (heat and bearing wear)
Supported with bearings
Powered by spinning shaft/ magnetic forces
Micromed
Axial flow design
Smaller size
EXPANDS THE POOL of qualified patients
Simplifies implantation
Limited blood contact surface area
Fewer moving
parts
Reduces cost
Potentially more durable
-has flow probe
