Similiarities
ATSS takes place 1964-2003 (37-year time frame)
WH takes place ~1770-1802 (32-year time frame)
So they take place over a similar time frame.
Interestingly, 30 years is seen as the length of a generation, perhaps suggesting the exploration of how society and families change over time.
Both novels utilise large time jumps
9 years in ATSS, 12 years in WH
Both used to skip the childhood of the next generation (Laila, Cathy)
Differences
Time is Linear in ATSS, whereas there are interludes in the ‘present’ 1802 where Nelly is telling Lockwood the story in WH
ATSS ends in present tense whereas WH is entirely in past tense.
HF
Both novels are ‘historical fiction’ and reflect on the effects of time.
