Kill bacteria or prevent them from reproducing -> different antibiotics kill different types of bacteria
. Viruses -> antibiotics don’t detroy viruses, they only target bacterial cells

Antibiotic resistance

1. Mutaions can cause a bacteria to develop resistance to an antibiotic
2. Antibiotics will only kill the non-resistant strains of bacteria
3. Resistant bacteria can survive and reproduce increasing the population of the resistant strain
4. The resistant strain could causs a serious infection -> can’t be treated by antibiotics
   . Example: MRSA causes serious wound infections -> resistant to methicillin
