- An intensive 26-week course designed to develop civilians with potential into effective military leaders
- Comprised of three 8 week terms interspersed with 1-week leave.

- Conducted at RAF Cranwell (predominantly Whittle hall)
In reasonable depth, what is the OACTU and what is it’s purpose?
- Officer and Aircrew Training Unit
- Consists of 4 squadrons
- A squadron Charged with delivering the short
courses at OACTU (e.g docs, nurses and lawyers,
reserve officers, commissioning warrant officers) - B, C and D Squadron deliver the training to IOT
officer cadets - OACTU commanded by a wing commander, each
squadron commanded by a squadron leader (no
larger than 120 cadets).
- A squadron Charged with delivering the short
- Squadron broken down into ~30 to form a flight (managed by a Flt Lieut and Flt Sgt.)
What qualifications do you have the opportunity to gain after IOT?
Level 5 diploma from both the ILM and CMI, and gin vital credits towards a further education qualification
In reasonable depth, What is the main focus of term 1 and what does it involve?
- Main focus is basic militarisation, designed to transition
one from civilian to service life:- Issue and preparation of uniforms
- Medical and dental assessment
- Drill and;
- Regular inspections of dress, equipment and living
quarters
- Team building activities
- Intensive fitness program to prepare for physically
arduous nature of the course - Heavy focus on the intro to military skills:
- Weapons handling
- Feild craft
- First aid
- CBRN
- Introduction to the academic elements of IOT

- An opportunity to prove that we can utilise our newly
learned skillset
- Now potentially working as a bonded team with an
unparalleled sense of belonging and cohesion

- Heavy focus on leadership
- Starting with a week at one on the RAF’s FDTC’s
(Opportunity to learn more about ones self and my
team through adventurous activities and put some
of the leadership skills learnt in term 1 to practice)
- Starting with a week at one on the RAF’s FDTC’s
- Exercise MILAID (Wk. 3)
- More advanced leadership exercise with longer
distances, more difficult leads, more difficult tasks
and more arduous conditions.

- Also Concentrates on APS
- Programme of lectures, self-study and tutor-led
discussion groups (Tested via end of term essay) - Also aims to educate on military doctrine, the ethics
of Warfare, and Critical Analysis through a number

- A week at another FDTC to really explore one’s own
leadership style in a less pressured environment - Culminates with pinnacle leadership exercise where
candidates are deployed to simulated HQ and conduct a large scale air operation.
