What does base of support mean?
Part of the body is in contact with the flood, a broad base of support provides stability (feet separated shoulder width apart)
What does line of gravity mean?
An imaginary vertical line passing through the center of gravity
What does center of gravity mean?
Point around which the body is balanced, not leaning to one side
What position are you most stable in?
When your center of gravity aligns with the center of your base of support
What are the 8 rules of body mechanics?
- Provide broad base of suport
- Work at comfortable height
- When lifting, bend knees and keep back straight
- Keep load well balanced and close to body
- Roll of push heavy objects, avoid pulling or lifting
- Distribute weight equally to both feet
- Maintain good posture
- Ask for help when lifting heavy objects
What are the common pt body positions?
Recumbent, supine, prone, fowlers, trendelenbrug, reverse trendelenburg
What is recumbent?
Any position where the pt is lying down
What is lateral recumbent?
pt is lying on one side
aka decub
What is supine?
pt is lying on back
What is prone?
pt is lying face down
What is Fowler’s?
supine but upper body is elevated
What is Trendelenburg?
pt head is lower than feet, usually 15 degrees
What is reverse Trendelenburg?
pt head is higher than feet
How do you prepare for a safe pt transfer?
- Plan what you are going to do and prepare work area
- Remove any obstacles
- Obtain equipment and check for safety and function
- Explain to pt what you are going to do
- Enlist pt help if possible
- Ask for help if needed
When assisting a stroke pt, which side of the pt should you be on?
the pt’s weak side
