Transtheoretical Model
The theory proposes that change involves a sequence of stages through which people progress as they consider, start and maintain new behaviours.
Precontemplation (Stage 1)
No intention of changing their behaviour as they are unaware they even have a problem.
Contemplation (Stage 2)
The person becomes aware they have a problem, but they make no commitment to change it yet.
Preparation (Stage 3)
The person wants to take action to correct the problem.
Action (Stage 4)
The person actively changes their own behaviour.
Maintenance (Stage 5)
Sustained change occurs and new behaviours replace the old.
Relapse (Stage 6)
The person can fall back into their old pattern of behaviour.
