Q

principles of load bearing

A
  • hardware of sufficient strength that is able to bear the entire load
  • plates and screws to immobilize the fractured segments
  • use of thicker, rigid plates with bi-cortical screws to immobilize the fracture segments or lag screws
  • Requires with at least 3 on each side of the fracture

Q

load sharing

A
  • form of hardware that is unable to bear the entire functional load across fracture
  • ORIF without relying solely on the plates and screws to immobilize the fracture
  • uses miniplates and monocortical screws along the lines of osteosynthesis as described by champy

Q

line of osteosynthesis

A

first described by champy in 1976 - a line around mandible where plating the tension and compression forces are balanced and thus offering best bio- mechanical advantage for positioning of plates and screws.

Q

thread shape difference of self drilling vs self tapping

A

self drilling: insertion without pre drilling or tapping

self tapping: requires pre drilling of a pilot hole, the insertion of the screw will create its own thread into bone.
