How do you show a triplet
A
You beam the notes together (if quavers) and you write a 3 on the beamed side of the notes. If its a crotchet triplet you use square brackets and write 3 on the ball side.

Does a triplet have to be 3 of the same notes
A
No its does not have to be the same note and they don’t have to be three. A triplet is a triplet as long as the notes add up to the value of 3 whatever value there would normally be 2 of.
