A
- The theory of inventive problem solving
- Derived from studying patterns of innovation in patents
- Takes a systematic, data-driven approach to innovation rather than spontaneous brainstorming
- Uses inventive principles (e.g. removal - lunar landing) and engineering parameters (e.g. durability of moving object) that are the basis for technological innovations
- Improves existing systems/ products by resolving contradictions in their design (improving one attribute of the system can lead to deterioration in other attributes e.g. strength/ flexibility)

A
- Identify the specific problem (e.g. ketchup bottle being upside down falling over)
- Make the problem more general (how to make things more stable)
- Identify a general solution using TRIZ principles(give them a larger base)
- Then apply the general solution to the problem to determine a specifc solution (make the bottle cap wider)
