UNIT 1: Lipids Flashcards

(9 cards)

1
Q

Lipids

A

A class of molecules that are generally small in side (often not considered a macromolecule) and do not include true polymers.

  • Composed of C,H, and O, but O is found in small quantities.
  • Nonpolar (hydrophobic) due to less partial charges from a lack of oxygen.

Q

Fatty Acids

A

Long carbon chains with a carboxyl group at one end.

  • Saturated: No double bonds
  • Unsaturated: Contains one or more double bond and may kink.

A

Classified as an alcohol due to it’s hydroxyl groups.

Q

Tri-glycerides

A

3 fatty acids joined to a glycerol by an ester linkage bond between a hydroxyl and a carboxyl group.

Q

Phospholipids

A

A major component of cell membranes that assemble as a bilayer of H2O and are composed of 2 fatty acids attached to a glycerol and a phosphate.

  • Contain a hydrophobic tail and a hydrophilic head
  • Polar due to charges

Q

Steroids

A

Lipids that have very few oxygens and four fused rings. Groups attached to the rings determine the type of steroid.

EX: Testosterone
