Chemical Reaction
A chemical reactions occurs if:
Elements and compounds forming new substances
A change in colour or an odour occurs
* Energy is released or absorbed (heat, light or sound)
* A gas is produced (you see bubbling)
* A precipitate forms (a solid is produced from two liquid solutions)
Chemical Equation
Statement of what occurs in a chemical reaction
Reactants
Products
Catalyst
R: On left side of equation
P: On right side of equation
Catalyst
Makes a chemical reaction occur faster without itself being consumed in the reaction
Diatomic elements and more
F2, B2, H2, I2, O2, N2, C2, S8, P4
Combustion
A chemical reaction in which a substance burns in oxygen to produce combustion products and often, a flame.
Organic compound
A molecular compound that contains one or more carbon-carbon bonds and, often, one or more carbon-hydrogen bonds
Complete combustion
Reaction of an element or compound with excess oxygen, producing only H2O(g) and CO2(g)
Incomplete combustion
Reaction of an element or compound with insufficient oxygen
Produces Carbon monoxide (CO)(g) and soot (C)(s) which causes health hazards
Burning splint: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen
Carbon: Put out the fire
Oxygen: Re-ignites fire
Hydrogen: Makes a pop sound
Neutralization
A special case of double displacement reaction that produces water (a liquid
product)
