What is inertia?
The tendency of an object to resist a change in its state of motion.
The greater than mass, the more the inertia is required to move it.
The lower the mass the less inertia is required to move it .
So it takes more inertia to move Mr Connoway because he is fat and has more mass
However it takes less inertia to move Diya because she is thin and has less mass
Newton‘s first law
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Weight
The force of gravity acting on an object.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Difference between Mass and Weight
Mass does not change when you go into space, but your weight will.
Mass is the amount of matter an object.
weight is the force of gravity acting on the object.
Newton’s second law
Force equals mass times acceleration
If mass goes up, acceleration does down
If force goes up, so does acceleration.
What is the equation for weight (N)?
Weight (N)= mass (kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg)
What is the gravitational field strength on earth?
10 N/kg
This means on earth, an object with a mass of 1kg has a weight of 10N
Rule about gravitational field strength:
As long as you’re on earth
1kg = 10N
Newton’s third law
If body A(💜) everts a force body B(💙)
Then body B(💙) exerts an equal and opposite force on body A(💜)
Name the two forces acting on a skydiver as they fall and state the direction of each of the forces
Gravity pulls them downwards
and air resistance pushes them upwards
Explain how a skydiver reaches a terminal speed
When the resistance is equal and opposite to their weight. The forces are balanced so the skydiver continues to fall at a constant speed
This is known as their terminal velocity.
