What is Public liability insurance
Business insurance. It can cover compensation payments and legal costs if a member of the public (maybe a customer, a supplier, or a passerby) sues your business because they’ve been injured or their property has been damaged.

It is a type of training that teaches workers how to safely lift, push, pull, and carry objects.

What sort of measures can an employer put in place to maintain fire safety?
- Keeping sources of ignition and flammable substances apart (for example the storage of chemicals at a swimming pool)
- Knowing how to detect fires and how to warn people quickly if they start, for example installing smoke detectors and fire alarms, and having an emergency action plan to evacuate buildings.
- Having the correct fire fighting equipment for putting a fire out quickly
- Keeping fire exits and escape routes clearly marked and unobstructed at all times
- Ensuring workers receive appropriate training on procedures they need to follow, including fire drills
- Reviewing and updating your risk assessment regularly
Manual handling background and statistics
Manual handling is the main cause of muscular skeletal disorders (MSD) at work, and manual handling is the main work activity responsible for causing back disorder. The total number of MSD cases in 2014/15 was 553,000 out of a total 1,200,000 work related illnesses (46%). In 2014/15 9.5 million working days were lost due to manual handling injuries.

In terms of manual handling what should Employers and Employees do?
- Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling
- Assess the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling that cannot be avoided
- Reduce the risk of injury by using lifting aids such as hoists to get disabled clients into a swimming pool, making the loads lighter and reducing the amount of twisting.
What is COSHH?
The control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) regulations 2002 are in place to control hazardous substances in the workplace, such as chlorine in swimming pools, cleaning chemicals and dust produced by machines.
What is DDA?
1995 Disability Discrimination Act
- Bans employers discriminating against job seekers and employees with disabilities, and by service providers against discriminating against service-users with disabilities.
What is DBS?
Disclosure and barring service
- A service that checks a person’s criminal history and cautions. Decide who may be liable to be taken off or put on the barred list. The DBS helps employers make safer hiring decisions and prevents unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, such as looked after children, Older people, Disabilities and children.

What is Equal opportunities (EOPS)?
Every person, no matter what race, gender, ethnicity and age or disability must be treated exactly the same regarding health and safety in the workplace. Any special requirements must be taken into account, but not used as an excuse to discriminate them.

What is Duty of care?
Duty of care is a legal obligation to act in a certain way towards others, and to prevent harm to them.
Legal and Ethical responsibilities when leading activities:
- Coaches are responsible for the health and safety of clients in their charge. They should have access to first aid facilities and be able to contact 999.
- A Coach / instructor could be liable if evidence can show that normal standards and practices have not been followed.
- Coaches have a responsibility to protect children from all forms of abuse
- Coaches should have appropriate insurance that covers both public liability and personal accidents
- Many governing bodies include insurance as part of their affiliation fee.
The Potential areas of maltreatment
- Under 16 users, which is particularly significant in changing rooms, especially at facilities which have shared changing for both genders and all ages.
Equal treatment of special population groups
Special populations groups are: Under 16s, over 50s, disabled persons, ante- and post-natal women.
All of these populations must be treated equally and give opportunities to participate in activities or given appropriate alternatives.
Manager and health and safety officer who are responsible for all health and safety. These responsibilities include:
- Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risk could be reduced
- Outlining safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards
- Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented
- Making changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation
- Preparing Health and safety strategies and developing internal policies
- Leading in-house training with managers and risk employees about health and safety issues and risks.
First aiders role?
Qualified to carry out first aid resulting from an incident or accident.
They must record all information in the first aid book and report any issues to the manager and/or health and safety officer.
Fire officer role?
Responsible for ensuring that all fire equipment, doors and alarms are in working order in case of a fire, in order to minimise the impact of a fire.
They would also provide staff training on how to use fire fighting equipment and emergency evacuation plans.
Coach instructor role?
Responsible for ensuring the class they are running is correct for the level, age and ability of the clients.
Ensuring that the class is suitable for the users will minimise any health and safety issues.
