positive stress, like being nervous for opening night. Helps us focus and motivates us. Short-term, provides energy burst
General Adaption Syndrome (GAS)
Describes general response pattern to prolonged stress
Tend and Befriend theory
Alternative stress model. Tend to people and befriend people who can support you
The three steps of GAS are
Alarm (initial shock)
Resistance (trying to cope/adapt)
Exhaustion (resources are depleted and you’re vulnerable to stressy stuff like getting sick)
Problem-focused coping
Manage SITUATION. Directly addresses the stressor and changes the situation
Emotion-focused coping
Manage EMOTIONS. Manage emotional distress. Changes how we feel about the situation. Can be adaptive (seeking support) or maladaptive (substance abuse)

Hypomania
