Zero Conditional

A

Facts and general truths; always true. IF+present simple + Presente Simple. Example: If you heat water to 100C, it boils.

Firts Conditional

A

Talk about a possible present or future or future situation and its result. IF + present simple + will (modal verb).
Example:
- If it rains, I will stay home.
- If she studies hard, She will pass the exam.
- If you feel sick, you should go to the doctor.
- If I finish work early, I might go to the gym.

Second Conditional

A

are used to talk about hypothetical or improbable situations in the present or future. We use the past tense (simple or continuos) in the if-clause and would (or could/might) + infinite in the other clause.
IF + Past Simple + Would + Verb
- If She were taller, she would play basketball
- If we didn’t have work tomorrow, we would stay up late tonight.
- If I spoke French, I could talk to them.
- If it stopped raining, we might go for a walk.

we can use were instead of was after I/He/She/It in the if-clause and we always use were in the expression if I were you

Third Conditional

A

are used to talk about a hypothetical situation in the past. Unreal situations in the past: regrets. We use the past perfect (simple or continuos) in the if-clause and would have (or could / might have) + part participle int the other clause. If-Clause (condición imposible) + Main Clause (Resultado Imposible).
IF + Past perfect + would have (or could / might have) + past participle.

  • If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
  • If the flight had been cancelled, We would have stayed in London.
  • If I had known you were coming, I could have baked a cake.
  • If the traffic hadn’t been so bad, we might have arrived on time. (Si el tráfico no hubiera estado tan mal, quizás habríamos llegado a tiempo).
  • What would you have done if you hadn’t lost the keys?

Alternatives to IF

A
  • as long as / so long as = siempre y cuando / mientras
    Ex. I’ll tell you what happend as long as/ so long as you promise not to tell anyone else.
  • Provided / Providing (that) = Siempre que / Con la condición de que
    Ex. Provided / Providing (that) the bank give us a mortgage, we’re going to buy hat flat.
  • Whether = si.
    Ex. I’m going to sell the car wheater you agree with me or not.
  • Even if = Incluso si..
    Ex. Even if I get the job, I’m going to carry on living with my parents for a while.
  • Supposing / Suppose = Suponiendo / Supongamos
    Ex. Supposing you lost your phone. What would you do.
  • Had I seen = Si lo hubiera visto
    Ex. Had I seen the sign, I would have stopped

A

To show how a past action affects the present
IF + Past Perfect + Would + verb
Se utiliza para decir que una acción o situación que no ocurrió en el pasado tiene un resultado visible en el presente.
Ex
- If he had taken the job,he would be rich now.
- If you hadn’t stayed up late, you wouldn’t be so tired.

Mixed 2 Conditional

A

To show how a present situation affects past outcome
IF+Past Simple + Would have + Past Participle
Este condicional mixto conecta una condición permanente en el presente con un resultado en el pasado.

Ex.
If I were good with numbers, I would have chosen to study engineering.
If she spoke Spanish,she would have understood the announcement.
