Why is evacuated tube system preferred?
because it is direct, efficient, relatively safe for the patient and the blood drawer, and allows multiple tubes to be easily collected

Enumerate the steps in performing blood collection using ETS
- Prepare all the materials and equipment for the evacuated tube system.
- Identify the patient by making the him state his name and birth date.
- After identifying the patient’s diet restriction and latex sensitivity, explain the procedure then position the patient, apply tourniquet and ask patient to make a fist.
- Search and select for the prominent vein.

- Clean the site of collection with 70% isopropyl alcohol in circular, outward motion.

- Reapply the tourniquet, and ask the patient to make a fist.

- Push in the tube with the hand that anchored the vein. Fill the first tube until blood flow stops.
- Remove the tube by applying a push pressure against the flared area of the ETS adapter while pulling the tube diagonally. Perform inversion of tubes when necessary, and insert another tube until the final one.
- After collecting the blood samples release the tourniquet. Apply cotton above venipuncture site without direct pressure to the needle. Remove the needle.

How should you uncap the needle?
Pick up the tube holder with your dominant hand, placing your thumb on top near the needle end and fingers underneath.
Uncap and inspect the needle for defects and discard it if flawed.
