  1. Clear overview of the extract - what is happening
  2. Identify elements of social and political protest writing you will use as they’re most important
  3. Make it explicit who is in which position based on your understanding of power/powerlessness
  4. Set up your argument. What is the writer doing and why?

  1. Topic sentence that states what you think writer has used aspect to show
  2. 3 points about each aspect with a quote to back up each point
  3. Methods and how writer uses it to shape meaning
  4. Evaluate writer’s message in presenting this aspect- what deeper meaning does it communicate?
