The Elizabethan Era
This was the time associated with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and is often seen as the golden age in English history when poetry, music and literature flourished. During this time, Shakespeare wrote many comedies.
The Jacobean Era
This was the time in Scottish and English history when King James I reigned (1603 -1625). Many of Shakespeare ‘s most famous tragedies were written in the early 1600’s and would have been performed at the Globe Theatre.
Witchcraft
In Shakespeare’s time, people believed in witchcraft and witches. They were believed to be people who had made a pact with the devil in exchange for supernatural powers, and who plotted to bring down humanity.
Women
This was a time in which women were seen as the property of men, belonging to and controlled by either their fathers or husbands. They had limited freedom over their own lives.
