What is a genome ?
An entire set of DNA
What is a proteome ?
The number of different proteins that a cell is able to produce
Why is the proteome of a prokaryote easily determined ?
Because they do not contain introns
Why is the genome of more complex organisms harder to determine ?
The DNA-contains many non coding regions and there are many complex regulatory genes to determine when other genes ‘switch on/off’
This means not every part of the DNA codes for a protein
What is a DNA ladder and what is it used for ?
Fragments of known length always loaded onto a gel at the same time
Used to compare with other samples to assess their size
