7
Q

What are three methods to prevent rusting?

A

Barrier - physical e.g paint
Attach a more reactive metal
Galvanisation - coat in more reactive metal - acts as barrier too

Q

What is photo mining?

A

Soil contains copper
Plant is grown and copper builds up in leaves
Harvested plant is burned - ash contains copper compounds
Displacement reaction with iron to obtain copper

9
Q

What is bioleaching?

A

Low grade ore and bacteria
Bacteria produce leachate solution (containing soluble copper compounds)
Pure copper extracted by electrolysis

Q

How is ground water treated?

A

Mesh removes any large debris
Sand and gravel filtration remove any smaller solid bits
Sterilisation - kills of any harmful microorganisms - can be done with chlorine gas, ozone or UV

16
Q

How is waste water treated?

A
  1. Screening
  2. Sedimentation - produces sludge and effluent
  3. Aerobic digestion of effluent - released back into the environment
  4. Anaerobic digestion of sludge - natural gas and fertiliser made
17
Q

How does the haber process work?

A

Hydrogen from methane is mixed with nitrogen from air
Catalysed by iron
Condensed into liquid ammonia which is removed
Happens at 450 degrees Celsius and 200 atm
Unused reactants are recycled

18
Q

What is an NPK fertiliser?

A

Formulations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium at the right percentages to help plants grow

19
Q

How is ammonium nitrate (fertiliser) made?

A

Ammonia makes nitric acid
Ammonia and nitric acid react to make ammonium nitrate

20
Q

How is potassium for NPK fertilisers made?

A

Mix of potassium sulfate and potassium chloride salts

21
Q

What are the products when phosphate rock reacts with nitric acid?

A

Phosphoric acid and calcium nitrate

22
Q

What are the products when phosphate rock reacts with sulphuric acid?

A

Calcium sulfate and calcium phosphate

23
Q

What are the products when phosphate rock reacts with phosphoric acid?

A

Calcium phosphate
