What are the risk factors for UTI?
Increased bacterial innoculation e.g. sexual activity, urinary incontinence, faecal inconstinence
Increased binding of uropathic bacteria e.g. spermicide use, menopause
Decreased urine flow e.g. dehydration, obstruction
Increased bacterial growth e.g. catheter, DM, immunosupression
What are the different types of UTI and the associated symptoms?
There is cystitis that has the symptoms of suprapubic pain, urgency, dysuria, haematuria
What further investigations should be done for UTI?
In women with greater than 3 symptoms then give empirical antibiotics without further testing If not: -urine dip -MSU -Blood culture - if systemically unwell -Imaging - for men with UTI
What organisms usually cause UTI?
Usually gram neg from bowel e.g. e coli
What is the treatment of UTI?
3 day course of trimethoprim or nitrofurantoin
