Definition of valid consent
Process by which a patient voluntarily agrees to a medical procedure or tretment after understanding its risks, benefits, and alternatives.
Mnemonic:
Very old isn’t capacitous
Very = voluntary
Section must be made freely by the patient- no manipulation
Old = ongoing
Consent isn’t a one time event so patients can withdraw or change minds at any time
Isn’t = informed
The patient must be fiully informed and they understand what they’ve been told
Capacitous = capacity
They must be able to understand, retain, weigh it, and communicate a decision
