What is validity?
Measuring what you set out to measure.
Controls increase internal validity
What is internal validity?
Looks at factors within the study, making sure the DV is solely effective by the IV.
What is face validity?
Checks if something looks like it will measure what it is supposed to measure.
What is construct validity?
Checks if you are you accurately measuring all aspects of the variable.
Concurrent validity
When a test correlates well with a measure which has previously been validated.
What is criterion validity?
This is a type of predictive validity, the extent to which a measure can predict the performance or behaviour.
What is external validity?
Looks at outside factors, to generalise findings.
What is population validity?
Checks if the results can be generalised to the wider population.
What is ecological validity?
Do the behaviours shown in the study present in everyday behaviour.
What is reliability?
Where research is carried out in a consistent way.
Standardised procedures increase reliability.
What is internal reliability?
It is the consistency of measurements used in the study.
What is external reliability?
If the study was repeated you should get similar results (replicating)
What is inter-rater reliability?
2 observers observing the same event in the same way and have a high level of agreement.
(80% correlation)
What’s is test-retest reliability?
Once a researcher has done a test, the p’s should have similar results if done again.
What is split half reliability?
Giving p’s 2 sets of questions all measuring the same thing, compare results.
