Various Flashcards

(30 cards)

1
Q

AvGas weighs…

A

6 pds per US gallon (30lbs per green bag)

1.64lbs per litre
[0.72 kg per litre, but I will be flying in pds]

Slight variation… on Mogas is 6.2 lbs per Usg, but 4% more Btu (better also).
Adding fresh mogas to stale (5 month old) will rejuvenate it, somewhat…

Q

My Takeoff Briefing…

A

Engine failure before ____ msl (1000agl) I will continue to fly straight ahead (could offset L or R 30deg due to WWF (wires-walls-fence) & wind

Once above (1000agl) I will turn into wind (Left or right) back to the Rwy, landing downwind.

Q

Takeoff Abort math…

V1 surrogate…calculation

A

Must have achieved >70% of liftoff speed by 50% of TORA= 40kts
70% by 30% tora if facing a 50’ obstacle
(is obstacle even higher than 50’?)

Q

What affect in % terms does a 1000’ higher Density Altitude have on my Tora?

A

I require 10% more Tora for every 1000’ DA.

Q

Flap settings

A

@40kts pull out to F3 until liftoff
(this also raises my tail)

1 notch on IFR approach at 70kts until Minima or Breakout VMC

2 notches for wheel landings in strong Crosswinds assumes a long enough Rwy.

*Go-Around begins with only 1 notch less while I fly level…

Q

Wheel Landing are useful under what conditions?

A

Crosswinds, Land on upwind wheel 1st!
-Gust protection
-More rudder authority
-Enhanced forward visibility
-Gives a Lower aoa on touchdown, less chance of bouncing back into the air.

Q

Can water form inside fuel tanks when aircraft is in the Hangar?

A

Yes, due to Condensation (temp changes at night, like dew on the grass in the AM.

Q

What do you think causes the gascolator to be blocked?

A

Frozen ice water!
Similarly for wing fuel tank drains

14
Q

Why must I avoid using a plastic funnel & Nylon clothing when refuelling?

A

-To avoid a buildup of Static electricity
-Use Grounding wire…with one of my tie down stake buried & attach to Strut or exhaust, caution it will be Hot!
-Painted or Corroded surfaces are not good grounding points.

15
Q

True of False Must drain tanks for water prior to walkaround…as manipulating wing will cause fuel to slosh.

A

-True, yes do it first! or water will do into suspension in the fuel.
-If not, let it sit at least 10min.

16
Q

Why should I avoid drawing a large single pushed of fuel sample?

A

As it creates a Mini-Tornado that pushes water to the outside like toilet bowl. Take sample in 3-short Bursts

17
Q

90% of engine wear occurs when?

A

During first 10sec after start…

18
Q

Maximum Engine starter times…

A

Crank for 10sec, then allow 20 sec cooling.
Then crank for 10sec with a full min of cool.
Max 5 start attemps then 30min of starter cooling.

19
Q

What does priming do?
Note: Always push the primer in quickly and firmly to better atomize the fuel, then pull it back slowly to ensure the plunger fully refills with fuel.

A

Raw fuel is directed to cylinder, whout passing through the Carb or intake manifold, but let vaporize 30sec (even in summer)

20
Q

What does MEF on a sectional chart indicate?

A

Highest Terrain or Obstacle in the quadrant +300’ (rounding up).
Assume 200’ clearance in Usa&Cad

21
Q

What is ‘FSS’ frequency in the US?
Callsign ‘Any Radio’

A

122.2 mhz; found when there is a Heavy line around a Com Box!
(Enroute Flight Advisory Service)

22
Q

Obstacles greater than xxx’ agl get a ‘small’ icon (triangle & dot), everything lower gets nothing!

A

200’ agl
So your in the ‘Danger Zone’ below 200’ agl!
Scud running under a 300’ cloud deck going to hit wires/towers…that are not Synthetic!

23
Q

Super Large Tower icon is saved for Towers >xxx than?

A

1000’agl
Red top means I will hit it,
Yellow is below me
Speed if below 70kts no longer shows

24
Q

What does a simple cirlce for an airfield indicated on the sectional?

A

Aerodrome without any Hard Surface

25
What does double circle aerodrome on VNC chart indicate?
Military airfield
26
How can I tell if depicted aerodrome has fuel service (same in both USA or Cad)?
-Four-squared off Cardinal points around the circle indicate fuel. -Small-Squares out 4-sides at cardinal pts
27
What does AOE mean near an aerodrome?
Airport of Entry (customs & immigration) Must ensure Flt plan is active & then Closed
28
Ctaf vs. Unicom*
Common traffic advisory frequency, talking to other aircraft, with my location and Intentions. Unicom is talking to someone on the ground (Alt setting, other traffic, Rwy in use), in italics...like Mont-Joli
29
How to calculate 50% tora on ground?
Pace entire tora and divide that in half and mark it clearly (1/2 way)
30
Where to setup foreflight Terrain caution baselines?
Settings, bottom, Alerts Map layer: Hazard Advisory, bottom tab, settings, Activation speed 70kts I use 50'red/300' yellow Make no mistake RED is Danger Close!
