What structures compose the external eye?
What are the 3 kinds of tear?
basal, reflex and emotional (crying)
Where is the lacrimal gland located?
within the orbit, latero-superior to the globe
When is the basal tear produced?
- even in absence of irritation or stimulation
When is the reflex tear produced?
- in response to ocular irritation
What structure produces tears?
the lacrimal gland
What is the tear reflex pathway?
afferent: cornea, innervated by sensory nerve fibres via ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve (V1)
- -> relays signal to CNS
efferent: parasympathetic nerve, which innervates the lacrimal gland
- -> tear film drains through the 2 puncta (tiny openings on upper+lower medial lid margins)
- -> flow through inferior+superior canaliculi into the tear sac
- -> tear finally drained out of tear sac into nasal cavity through tear duct
What are the functions of tear film?
N.B. healthy cornea constantly covered by tear film
What are the 3 layers of the tear film and their respective roles?
Where is the lipid layer of the tear film produced?
Meibomian glands along the eyelid margins
What is the conjunctiva?
What are the 3 layers of the coat of the eye?
What is the sclera?
What is the cornea?
