What is a system?
A system is a load of interrelated parts working together. They are a series of inputs (addition of matter and/or energy into a system), outputs (matter/energy leaves), stores (energy/mass is stored or transformed - builds up), flows (matter/energy moves in a system) and boundaries (limits to the system).
What are the three types of property inn a system?
What is an open system?
matter and energy can be transferred across the boundary into surrounding environments. Receive inputs/transfer outputs to other systems. Most ecosystems are a good example of this.
What is a closed system?
What are isolated systems?
have no interactions with anything outside the boundary. No input or output of energy or
matter.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
when there is a balance between the inputs and outputs, despite changing conditions
What is a positive feedback loop?
when a change of events amplifies the impacts of the original event - knock on effects. One
example an increase in Carbon Dioxide.
What is a negative feedback loop?
a chain of events that nullifies the impacts of the original event - effects of an action are nullified by its subsequent knock-on effects.
