What is the origin of the word incels and what it became and what are its members?

A

The origin of the word incel: Student of Toronto that said that men or women that want relationships but are unable to get it. Started as something people identified themselves as but transformed as an insult. Now a men group self-identified as heterosexual. About 100,000 active members, a little bit less now because their site has been shot down, but it is hard to say how many are in accord with those ideologies. Half white/half other racial ethnicities, all male under 30, 80% or America and Europe but not only. 85% have never had a romantic relationship, but some of them have. Clinical depression, anxiety, high rate of autism, other types of neurodivergence and disorder. High rate among them who are not employed, not a school and not in training. Relatively less educated than other people. Many of them still live at home with their parents.

Q

What do incels underestimate?

A

Attraction if much more than just looks. Incels tend to underestimate the fact that developing a relationship takes a lot of commitment and trying. If they don’t try, they are not going to get into one for sure. By adopting these ideologies, it sets you behind, and how do you expect women to like you if you despise them.

Q

What do incels do?

A

They often rape and sexual violence and more general violence against society, because they believe society is responsible for that, by allowing it to happen. Some of them also have political demands, which would qualify them as a terrorist group. Type of political demands: cut off the escape route for women, if we cut the ways for women to go to college they will want to marry, legalizing prostitution.

Q

What can we do about incels?

A

Very easy to thing they are sick, delusional and dangerous men. Hard for us to feel empathy for someone who hate women that much. If you are a woman, targeted by them, its really hard to be empathic. If we don’t try to understand first, things are not likely to get better. Many of their beliefs are far from reality but do not mean they don’t feel pain. Maybe try to think with them about concrete things that could help them get better and reintegrate society. Maybe try to reintegrate them into education system, work market… Do I want them as colleagues or at a workplace. Its also not true that they are all thinking the same way. They don’t all have the same views.

17
Q

What are the three internal debates of incels?

A
  1. Ascending from Inceldom or avoiding women altogether. Some of them hope that someday they will be able to find a relationship. But they are told that they are not real incels for that. They are “fake cells”.
  2. Expanding the community vs. gatekeeping their community
  3. Should incels use violence? Quite a bit of disagreement in the community.

Q

What is the research of the 4th year PhD student?

A

4th year PhD student came to explain his research: Infiltrating neo-Nazi communities online and see how they used masculinity to bring young men into their communities. Scholars noted that misogyny is a common ideology between all those right focused groups (incels, neo-Nazi, …). Focused on American context. A lot of interconnecting between those groups… Recruitment strategies.
