President (head of state)
Elected every 7 years
Controlled army navy and air force
Could use article 48 to rule on his own in an ‘emergency’ 🥸☝️
This didn’t need the support of the Reichstag
Chancellor (PM)
Chosen by president (usually from the party with the most votes at an election)
Responsible for day to day running of the country
Needs support from minimum half of the Reichstag to introduce New laws
Reichstag
Introduced laws
Members elected every 4 years
Voting system = proportional representation
German people (electorate)
Men and women over 20
Elected president and politicians in Reichstag
They had basic freedom ☺️🤯
Proportional representation good or bad?
Too many different parties!!!!!👎👎👎 so hard to make decisions and introduce laws there was never even a party that had over 50% of the seats. This meant coalitions and deals must be made with smaller parties just to get things done
Some people actually preferred the ‘traditional rule of the kaiser’ 👴☝️ (this was basically the old, rich people)
Though having ONE strong leader did have its advantages and looked especially desirable compared to the chaos of the Reichstag
It was slow 🐌
