  –> loss of empires - Ottoman, Austria-Hungary, German; rising nationalism in those areas
  –> demographic changes - loss of young men especially, as well as changing social structure and fall of the aristocracy especially in Britain
  WHY? death duties and loss of officers which disproportionately involved upper class men
  –> this also contributes towards gender roles as less men mean that marriage is no longer an option for many women, forces more societal acceptance of female independence out of necessity
  –> economic impacts globally: living standards post-war drop for many people as countries fight huge national debts and global instability in the economy. Leads to hyperinflation in Germany and Wall Street Crash, which contributes to a lack of trust in economic institutions and more political extremism due to extreme poverty.
  –> State intervention becomes more common: first through ‘total war’ impact of WW1, free trade and individualism become less prevalent so liberalism ideologically begins to struggle. Later, economic impacts from Wall Street Crash cause more interventionism such as the New Deal and other Keynesian ideas of the economy rather than relying on Adam Smith’s hand of the market.
