Sentence Structure
Look for:
- run-on sentences
- comma splices
- sentence fragments
- sentences vary in structure (both simple and compound sentences)
Imagery
Look for:
- use of varied figurative language
- use of descriptive language
- use of sensory words
Voice
Look for:
- does personality come through in writing?
- tone
- use of rhetorical questions
- use of humor and/or drama
- point of view
Primary source
Original material that presents original thinking, reports a discovery, or shares new info
Secondary source
Generally, accounts written after the fact. Interpretations or evaluations of primary sources. Are not evidence, but commentary on it.
Ex) bios, histories, some articles, commentaries
Tertiary sources
Consists of info that is a collection of primary and secondary sources.
Ex) textbook (sometimes second), almanac, encyclopedia, manuals, dictionary
Expository Writing
Writing to “expose” what you know on a topic by using facts and evidence.
Ex) write about the main causes of WWII.
