Q

A train is set to return after taking a wrong route at a junction, why might signallers and train driver argue about this?

A

They argue about who’s fault it is, signaller set wrong route but driver knows their route and shouldn’t have took it and called signaller. Both at fault!

Q

Examples of working in the wrong direction …..6

A

An engineering train is to MOVE towards a line under possession

A shunting movement is to be made through points that are worked from a GROUND FRAME

Single line working applies for wrong direction movements

An on track machine working in section is to return to or towards the published start mileage of the site of work

An engineering train or on track machine is working in a protection zone (additional protection- track circuit occupied by T-cod) line protected again so can go back and fourth (the train)

A rail-grinding train is to return to extinguish a lineside fire

All previous examples do NOT need permission from control if within one signal box area only

Q

Before you authorise the movement you must make sure that…. 5

A

The barriers or gates at any controlled level crossing are closed to road traffic

Any automatic half-barrier crossings (AHBC) without wrong direction controls are locally operated

All points are in the required position locked by facing point locks (where provided) with reminders

Any unwanted points are secured

Any ground-frame release giving access to the route is normal unless it needs to be operated for the movement

Q

Propelling
If the train is being driven from the rear these rules apply….4

A

You must not clear a signal for propelling movement to begin unless the route is set throughout the movement

You must not allot a propelling movement to proceed towards a position light signal or shunting signal if any movement is occupying or about to occupy the converging point immediately beyond that signal

If you have allowed a propelling movement to proceed towards a position light signal or shunting signal that is at danger. You must not allow another movement to occupy the converging point immediately beyond that signal until the movement is completed.

If the driver is unable to drive from the leading cab, and they will not have a better view from another cab there must be a Shunter to control the movement.
