Tell me a bit about the atmosphere
The earth is wrapped in layers of gas called the atmosphere.
It is tied to the earth by gravity so it cannot disperse into space.
It’s 500km (300 miles) thick, being made of à mix of 10 gasses.
Where does our weather take place
The lowest layer of the atmosphere called the troposphere ( bottom 12km / 7 miles).
How can the earth be divided up
The earth can be divided up into climate zones based on their temperature and rainfall characteristics.
How can our climate in NI be described
Temperate. This means we have no extremes. Average temp is 10 degrees Celsius and average rainfall is 1200mm/year.
Cool summers, mild winters, rain all year round.
Weather
The word weather is used to describe day to day changes in the conditions of the atmosphere - the elements of the weather.
Climate
Climate is the average conditions of the weather taken over a long period of time , usually 35 years.
What are climate zones
Large areas with a similar climate
Temperate
Cool summers, mild winters, and a fairly even distribution of rainfall throughout the year.
Latitude of temperate zones
Between 40 and 60.
What is the weather made up of
The weather is made up of different elements, which are measured with special instruments or are observed by à meteorologist . These measurements are then recorded and used in the making of climate graphs and weather forecasts.
