Name the main cloud types
Cirrus, nimbostratus, stratus, cumulus, cumulonimbus.
Describe cirrus
Very high and wispy. Usually made of ice particles.
Describe nimbostratus
Nimbus comes from the Latin word for shower. And stratus reminds us that these clouds are stratified into layers. Quite thick layers of rain bearing cloud.
Describe stratus
Latin word for layer. Low and less grey than nimbostratus but still bring a lot of rain. They are responsible for drizzle.
Describe cumulus
Seem to be moving faster than others. Mostly white and have a fluffy appearance. They can bring rainy intervals, especially when they turn grey at the base.
Describe cumulonimbus
These are cumulus clouds that keep on gathering more moisture. They start to tower as air rises. Develop vertically. Can be 10km high. Can trigger hail, thunder and lightening, and can bring intensive thunderstorms.
