what is anger management
a form of cognitive behavioural therapy and has a 3 stage approach
first stage
cognitive preparations, offender learns to identify cues for their anger, they then reflect on past event where they were angry, and then consider if it was rational
therapists role is to help offender redefine the situation as non threatening
second stage
skill acquistion, offender learns skills to manage their own behaviour in anger provoking situations, these could include physiological methods such as methods of relaxation
third stage
applictaion practice, the ofender has role play opportunities to practice new skills and recieve feedback, successful negotiation in role play will be met with positive reinforcemnt from therapist
strngths of anger management
unlike behaviour modification, ange r management aims to get to the root cause of the problem
weakness
there are assumptions that anger causes offending, which may be false , example harold shipamn, murdered not out of anger
