What is circuit training?
A series of exercises performed in a special order called a circuit
Each activity takes place at a ‘station’ lasting between 30 seconds and 1.30 minutes, designed to improve speed, agility, coordination, balance, and muscular endurance.
What does continuous training improve?
Cardio-vascular fitness
It involves working for a sustained period of time without rest and helps to burn fat, but can become boring.
What is cross training?
Using another sport or activity to improve fitness
For example, a volleyball player uses power training for that sport to help with fitness for long jump.
What is Fartlek training?
Varying speed and terrain during exercise
It improves aerobic and anaerobic fitness by varying the intensity and speed of training.
What does interval training involve?
Alternating between periods of hard exercise and rest
It improves speed and muscular endurance.
What is the purpose of weight training?
To provide resistance to the muscles
It improves muscular strength, muscular endurance, and power.
Define repetitions in the context of training.
One single movement or exercise
Example: 1 star jump or press-up.
What is a set in training?
The amount of repetitions performed
Usually between 6 and 12.
What is the maximum repetition?
The heaviest weight you can lift for that exercise
Example: a squat or bicep curl.
What is a static exercise?
Holding a position still
Example: The plank or sitting against the wall.
What is aerobic exercise?
Uses oxygen to create energy
Your heart doesn’t need to beat as fast as during anaerobic exercise.
What is anaerobic exercise?
Uses glucose instead of oxygen for energy
Your heart has to beat very fast and doesn’t have time to use oxygen.
How is maximal heart rate calculated?
220 - age
It represents the fastest that your heart can beat.
