Informal deviance
When Individuals behaves in a way that violates informal rules
Ex) double dipping
Formal deviance
Individual behaves in a way that violates written rules that are upheld by some type of authority figure or institution
Ex) getting on phone in this class
Social structures
Overarching set of social relations and patterned behaviors that produced and reproduced through human behavior to organize social life
Ex) family, schools, & governments are social structures that influences how people live
Strain theory
People engage in deviant behaviors because there is a mismatched between societal expectations and means (Strat and resources) available to achieve these goals
Ex) someone stealing money because they can’t afford college tuition
Anomie
State of individual, group or collective normlessness that occurs when social rules are unclear or no longer provided effective guidance for how people should act
Ex) During a natural disaster, people may feel lost and unsure how to behave
Differential association
Deviant behavior is something that an individual learns from continual interaction with other people who regularly violate social norm
Ex) a teen starts shop lifting because their friends do it
Social disorganization
Deviant behavior are a by product of versions of social bonds in a community, or society
Ex) a neighborhood with few schools, poor policing, and high poverty may have more crime
Labeling theory
Behaviors are designated as deviant by other social actors in response to the violation of social norms
Ex) if a student is labeled a “troublemaker” they may continue misbehaving because of the label
Primary Deviant
When individual violates a norm and this violation is thought not to be due to individuals personality but is temporary instance will not happen again
Ex) a teen shoplifts once but is not labeled a “criminal”
Secondary Deviant
After an individual has already been labeled as deviant they continually engage in violation of the norm they were labeled for
Ex) A student called a “troublemaker” keeps skipping school and stealing
Tertiary Deviant
When the individual labelled as deviant seek to embrace their behaviors as apartof who they are and seek to change societal perceptions of the behavior that was labelled as deviant
Ex) a person who smokes weed and argues it should be legal
Stigma
Process of devaluation that is applied to an individual as a result of a specific label. This devaluation process is context dependent, meaning, any label can be stigmatizing depending on the environment the individual resides in.
Ex) a person with visible scars being treated unfairly or avoided
Institutionalization
When behavior, action or belief is repeated so many times, and across different social groups that it becomes widely accepted and integrated into everyday social life thereby becoming invisible
Ex) schools) hospitals, and governments are institutional structures that shape how society works
Crimilization
The process of converting social behaviors seen abnormal, deviant, or threatening into crimes that are managed through the legal system
Ex) turning the act of using weed into a crime
