Systemic Sexism
A pattern of systematic discrimination through rules that operate at different levels of social structure to enact gender stratification
Ex) Women being paid less than men for the same job is systemic
Systematic Discrimination
The denial of opportunities & rights to individuals not belonging to the dominant group through both formal & informal rules across a single institution within a social system
Ex) If schools in a certain neighborhoods get less funding because of the community’s race or income
Patriarchy
A social system that has its roles patterned around sex categories that values hegemonic masculinity and devalues hegemonic femininity
Ex) a company where mostly men are bosses and women have fewer opportunities
Traditional gender norms
Hegemonic masc + Hegemonic Fem
Ex) expecting women to cook and men work outside
Misogyny
a negative sanction applied to women who violate traditional gender norms, which often manifests through harassment, backlash, increased scrutiny in task evaluation, or victim blaming
Ex) making jokes that insults women just because they are women
Misandry
a negative sanction applied to men who violate traditional gender norms. Increases susceptibility to harassment & discrimination
Gender pay gap
A ratio representing the difference between the earnings of men and women to identify inequality.
In this ratio women make less than men
(.85 cents to a dollar in 2024
Ex) if a women earns $80 for a job a man does for $100
Second shift
The unpaired labor that women do around the house in addition to working a full - time job
Ex) a women works 8hrs at the office then comes home to cook and clean
Glass ceiling*
The idea that minority population (race, gender, white)
Hostile sexism
Prejudicial attitudes towards women who created this challenging gender roles
Ex) telling a women she’s “ too emotional” to do a leadership job
Benevolent sexism
Paternalistic attitudes towards women where they need to be protected or idolized because they are incapable of doing things themselves being patronizing saying women shouldn’t do physical labor because it’s a ‘mans’ job.
Ex) saying “women are naturally better caregivers, so they should stay home with kids”
Intersectionality
Idea that someone does not experience the effects of social identity in a vacuum, but that different aspects of social identity isn’t interact with one middle and both advantage & disadvantage
Ex) a Black women may face both racism and sexism at the same time
Matrix of dominantions
Idea that marginalized social identities interact with one another to create even stronger forms of depression and inequality
Ex) a poor black women may experience racism, sexism, and class inequality all at once
