Present for 2 consecutive weeks
Single or Recurrent episodes
Mild/ Moderate/ Severe

Lack of enjoyment in activities
Describe different Emotional (affective) states.
+ State how it may appear in Adults and children/ adolescents.
1) Depressed Mood
2) Loss of interest
Adults = feel sad, hopeless, empty
Children/Adolescents = Irritable
Describe the Cognitive effects.
1) Blame themselves for things out of their control
2) Recurrent thoughts of death
3) Guilty/ feeling unworthy of others time
4) Negative thoughts
Describe the Bodily/ Physical effects.
1) Reduced energy/ fatigue
2) Change in appetite, sig loss or gain, change more than 5% of body weight in 1 month
3) Withdraw socially
4) Insomnia or Hypersomnia
Describe the Behavioural effects.
1) Fatigue/ loss of enjoyment = social withdrawal
2) Psychomotor retardation/ Agitation, must be observed by others
Describe some features of Depression.
1) APMS, McManus et al (2016), every 7 years in the UK - 2014 = diagnosable depression 3.3 in every 100 ppl, increase from 2.7 in 100 in 2007
Higher in women than men
2) Watts et al (2015) = 22.99% of women undergoing ovarian cancer treatment experience depression
Co-Morbidity w/ other disorders = severe illness to judge to mortality
