A
technique used to identify individuals based on their unique DNA sequences

process of DNA profiling
A
- DNA is obtained (mouth swab, blood ect)
- DNA is digested with restriction enzymes which cut DNA at specific recognition sites
- fragments are separated by gel electrophoresis and stained. shorter fragments travel longer distances
- bonding pattern can be seen
- DNA to which the individuals is being compared to is treated with the same restriction enzymes
- banding patterns of the DNA samples can then be compared

STRs- non-coding regions of DNA and occur when a short sequence of DNA is repeated many times in a row. variable between individuals
