Q

What does a white diamond fixed to a semaphore signal mean?

A

No phone provided but the signal is track circuited so the presence of the train is known to the signaller.

Q

What is a “clearing point”?

A

The area beyond all semaphore stop signals (~400 metres) which provides a reference point before clearing the preceding signal.

17
Q

How are intermediate block home signals identified on the ID plate?

A

White square with vertical black line.

18
Q

If a signal box were to close how would the signaller set all signals?

19
Q

What is the risk if an outer home signal was swapped out to a colour light signal?

A

A clear colour light signal would show a green aspect which may lead a Driver to believe the inner home signal was also clear when it may be at danger.

20
Q

What does a semaphore subsidiary signal at danger look like?

A

Horizontal miniature white arm with horizontal red top and bottom edges. Red, white or no light.

21
Q

What does a semaphore subsidiary signal at proceed look like?

A

Miniature white arm with horizontal red top and bottom edges at 45⁰. Green light.

22
Q

Where would a semaphore subsidiary signal be located relative to the main semaphore arm?

A

Below on the same post.

23
Q

When the semaphore subsidiary signal is on what does this mean?

A

Obey the main arm.

24
Q

When the semaphore subsidiary signal is off what does this mean?

A

Pass the main arm at danger, proceed at caution

25
What does the term "proceed at caution" mean?
Proceed at a reduced speed which enables you to observe the line ahead to be clear, stopping at the next signal or short of any obstruction.
26
What letters can be associated with a subsidiary semaphore signal and what do they mean?
C: Calling on = proceed at caution towards the next train, signal or buffer stop being prepared to stop short of any obstruction. S: Shunt ahead = proceed for shunting purposes only.
27
What are the two types of semaphore shunting signal?
Miniature arms and discs.
28
What does a semaphore shunting disc signal at danger look like?
White or black circle with a horizontal red or yellow stripe. Red or yellow light.
29
What does a semaphore shunting disc signal at proceed look like?
White or black circle with a red or yellow stripe at 45⁰. Green light.
30
What is the difference between red and yellow semaphore shunting signals?
Yellow shunting discs only apply to movements in a particular direction.
31
How would you interpret a stacked semaphore arrangement?
Signals top to bottom apply to the corresponding lines left to right
32
How would you interpret a stepped semaphore arrangement?
Signals left to right apply to the corresponding lines left to right
33
Beyond stacked and stepped arrangements how else might a route be indicated to the driver?
Alphanumeric route indicator e.g. "DS" "1"
34
How would a semaphore signal not in use be identified?
White cross on arm and disc covered up.
35
What is a "fringe box"?
Signal box at the commencement and termination of Absolute Block signalling.
36
What does "AWS" stand for?
Automatic Warning System
37
What two warnings can AWS provide?
Audible bell or horn & visual yellow or black in cab indication
38
Which semaphore signals are fitted with AWS?
Distant and Intermediate Block distant signals?
39
What is a no block line?
A line where the signaller does not monitor the movement of trains, no block instrument is provided between two signal boxes and communication is by other means.
40
Within Absolute Block signalling, where are two trains permitted to shunt?
Within the station limits under the direction of the signaller.
41
How many home signals can a signal box control?
4
42
If the distant signal is at caution what must the driver do?
Be prepared to stop at the next or any subsequent home signals which apply.
